Tune in during and after the March 9-11 San Antonio conference as the ASCD Annual Conference Online 2002 highlights eight conference sessions in audio and presents Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders' keynote address in video. All are accompanied by full text transcription. Five of the features focus on Health in Education and are presented through generous underwriting by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Changing Education Through the Arts Long-term, genuinely collaborative partnerships with community organizations can bring useful resources to professional development programs. In this session, examine a partnership between the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and eight schools, called Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA). Discover strategies the partnership uses to meet challenges as it develops ongoing professional development to help teachers integrate the arts across the curriculum. Hockett, Fairfax County Public Schools, Reston, VA Steps to Keep Students Safe and Healthy Finding appropriate resources can be a barrier to supporting safe school environments and learners' mental and physical health. Presenters will demonstrate the Healthy Youth Funding Database and describe strategies for using this and other funding resources to implement effective practices that meet today's challenges. The session will feature education leaders' experiences, and participants will be invited to share steps that they have taken or considered. Presenters will discuss how their partnerships engaged students in identifying, studying, and developing interventions for community public health problems and how they conducted these activities using integrated curricula, peer education, service learning, and community engagement. This workshop provides solid training in taking top-notch care of oneself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Participants will receive resources, ideas, activities, and readings that will help not only to handle the stress that comes with the territory but also to truly engage in an understanding of the nobility of the profession. All will begin to find the kind of centered, peaceful approach to the work that will improve life both personally and professionally and, of course, for every child with whom we work. Presenters: Ray McNulty, Windham Southeast Supervisory Union, Brattleboro, VT; Ellen Harris, Plymouth State College, NH Enhancing Teacher Health Literacy Through Evidence-Based Learning Evidence-based learning requires educators to acquire and disseminate information that is derived from scientific evidence. Applying evidence-based strategies to school health education enhances health literacy and helps to deliver the best practices of teaching. This session will present an innovative, university field-tested paradigm for teacher preparation and staff development that enhances teacher health literacy. The topic of adolescent risk-taking behavior will serve as the focus for applying the principles of evidence-based learning. Presenters: Fred L. Peterson, Tammy J. Terry Parker, Waxahachie Independent School District, TX Empowering Students to Become Interactive, Lifelong Learners Presenters will discuss how the combination of shared inquiry and rich and challenging literature can empower students to become interactive and lifelong learners. Attendees will participate in activities that use text-dependent support and encourage thinking and discussion. Students from a local school will conduct demonstrations, and there will be time for questions and answers. Handouts will also be available. Presenters: Karen J.
